In 1967, Afra and Tobia Scarpa designed Carlotta for the Cassina Young Play program, a collection of sophisticated minimalist pieces designed to deliver casual comfort to a younger clientele. For Carlotta, the architects employed only four frames and a complex system of joints and finger joints. Their design simplicity highlights the skills of the Meda joinery in masterful wood craftsmanship, in this case, teak. The internal corners of the structure have the signature semi-circular cutouts that call to mind the intent of the original design to focus on optimizing the production process. The hand-woven support cords crisscross the frame, thanks to a twist in the wood produced with CNC machines, demonstrating the innovative content Cassina invests in the project. Carlotta is perfect outdoor seating for casual comfort, thanks to its cushions padded with recycled PET fiber.

Tobia Scarpa

I CONTEMPORANEI

Was born in 1935, in Venice, where he earned a degree in architecture. With his wife Afra Bianchin (1937-2011), he opened a professional design studio, one of the most widely-acclaimed and well-known. Together, they worked on several innovative industrial design projects. In 1958, he began working with glass at Venini glassworks in Murano. In 1960, he started collaborating with Gavina. The “Bastiano” sofa, and “Vanessa” metal bed were the most successful pieces. For Cassina, he created exclusive home interior design pieces such as the “925” armchair, which became part of the collection of The Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 1970 he won the Compasso d’oro award for the “Soriana” armchair, which elicited greater interest in his work. He collaborated with different companies in that sector, and spent years styling the image of Benetton stores in Europe and the United States. As an architect, he designed Benetton’s entire production plant and management office complex, and its headquarters in Treviso. He designed many private homes, and supervised the restoration of monumental and historic buildings, including the Mercato Vecchio museum in Verona and the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice. He curated permanent and temporary art shows. He won the Compasso d’oro career award in 2008, and several other accolades. His work has been featured in many publications, and several of his creations are on display at the foremost museums in the world, as well as showcased at leading international exhibitions. He recently completed the work on the “Ca' Scarpa” museum in Treviso. In 2020 he started a new collaboration with Cassina.
